1. Where and when did you first discover your interest in music?
Music has always brought me closer to my natural energy but as a kid I didn’t focus on making music – I did so many things, singing, dancing, playing the piano, drawing, painting. But at the time when everyone else stopped singing and playing, approaching twenty years, I just kept on. And on and on. The need to be in the musical sphere seems to have constantly grown over the years up to the point where it is painful not to be allowed to make music, in some way or another. Singing, songwriting, mixing, producing, performing live – it is all a part of it. Then I started hearing this sound in my head, that I had never heard before, and I had to try to create that sound. See what it was like in free air, so to speak. That was the start of the NuBorg project.
2. What are your main ambitions in the industry?
Just to make music. To keep making music. Staying in it.
3. When did you start writing your own songs/music?
I used to gig, doing jazz-pop like stuff, and someone suggested I try to write a song or two… So I did. The first song I ever wrote became the title song of an album I did in that style (Gunhild Nyborg: Transitions). It opened some doors for me creatively and I have continued to explore songwriting after that.
4. What would you say is your music career highlight to date?
Probably what I am doing in studio now with producer Odd Jensen.
5. Who will we hear in your songs? What are your influences?
They are so many. Massive Attack and Portishead are definitely influences and I’ve heard Kate Bush being mentioned more than once. Also Pink Floyd, Queen, the Beatles, classical music, heartbeat, wind, waves…
6. What’s the most important thing you’d want to tell people about your current release?
Sliding Off the Edge of the World is a song about the fear of truly loving someone and losing control; ultimately it’s about the fear that you will let that fear dictate your reactions. It is a co-write between Sarah McLellan, Rick Norton and myself.
7. Who else can you recommend from your genre or local area for people to have a listen to?
One artist that has a lot going on is Emilie Nicolas, she’s doing some pretty amazing things! You can check her out on Soundcloud.
8. Any gigs coming up?
Yes, our very first gig with NuBorg is in Oslo early May, unfortunately an event that is not open to the public. Up until now the focus has been studio work, creating the sound. But we are working on live production at the moment and looking forward to gigging!
