Out now, ‘Tunnel Vision’ is the new free download from Stark – check out the track above and have a read of our excellent interview below!
Where and when did you first discover your interest in music?
I grew up in a small Northern town called Maryport, which just so happened (very luckily for me) to be the home of one of the biggest UK blues festivals. This meant there was a huge blues scene and all throughout the year amazing bands would come and play at the local pubs. I remember listening to them with my friends and thinking it was a million miles away from the processed pop stuff we’re used to hearing on the radio – I fell in love with the rawness and energy of live music and it sparked a passion in me.
What are your main ambitions in the industry?
None of us are in it for fame or fortune, and certainly not for the money! Our dream is just to make a living playing and recording our music, gigging everywhere and anywhere that’ll have us and to constantly improving our sound.
When did you start writing your own songs/music?
For me personally, composing has always gone hand in hand with playing music. I can’t imagine doing one without the other. I started playing guitar when I was 9 and probably wrote my first pitiful attempt at a piece of music not long after that.
What would you say is your music career highlight to date?
We had such a cool gig playing at 2000 Trees Festival! We played on a wooden stage in the middle of a forest all lit up with candle and lanterns – it was a very special night. We’ve also had a great time playing at amazing London venues like Dingwalls and the 100 Club.
Who will we hear in your songs? What are your influences?
I think one of our main strengths is the wide range of influences and genres we draw on due to our different musical backgrounds. Hopefully you’ll hear some Black Keys, Rival Sons, maybe even a bit of Tool!
What’s the most important thing you’d want to tell people about your current release?
It’s free for download at the beginning of March!!! Also, we’re really proud of it – we recorded it a great studio called Stronghold Studios and played the rhythm parts completely live. We then overdubbed some vocals, harmonies and slide guitar. It was really important for us to capture the excitement and energy of that “live” feeling, and hopefully we did that.
Who else can you recommend from your genre or local area for people to have a listen to?
Check out Tarq Bowen – a foot stomping, bluesy resonator thrashing singer songwriter. Always a pleasure seeing him live! Also check out our old Uni friends Lucas & King who play beautiful, delicate folk and roots music.
Any gigs coming up?
Yeah loads! Keep an eye out on the website for a full listing, but festivals already booked so far include Ilfracombe Blues Festival, Upton on Dee Blues Festival and the Big Green Cardigan in Battle
