A multi-instrumental duo, Living Dead Girl are a pair who take dark inspiration from twisted movies such as Donnie Darko, It Follows and Edward Scissorhands. With new single ‘Skylines’ on the way on October 16th, the time was perfect to ask them a few questions.
Where and when did you first discover your interest in music?
Jonno: I’ve always had an interest in music since I was a little kid, with hand-me-downs and recommendations coming from my older brother, things turned obsessive as I got into my teens and I really started to live for it.
Jess: I can’t remember a time when I didn’t play the piano, so music is something that’s always been inherent
- What are your main ambitions in the industry?
To continue making distinctive music that we’re proud of and to be able to get it to as many people as possible. If we can inspire someone the same way that our influences have inspired us, then that would be incredible.
- When did you start writing your own songs/music?
Jonno: I got a guitar when I was 13 and all I wanted to do was write. I’d record hundreds of terrible songs as I slowly got to grips with what I was doing. Later on I started getting more into electronic music and crafting sounds as well as songs. When it came to working with Jess who’d always written for piano we were both pushed in different directions. Our shared love of electronic music allowed the mix of songwriting and crafting sound to go hand in hand and become the basis of everything we do.
- What would you say is your music career highlight to date?
Jonno: We’ve had definite highlights with other bands, Jess has played shows out in Canada and fell in love with the new-city-every-night lifestyle of touring. I’m more of a stay-inside-and-work-in-the-music-cave kind of person, so listening back and finally sharing the finished mixes of our songs has been a real highlight for me. Everything was recorded piece by piece, in different places, over months and months, so hearing it all come together into what it is now was a great moment.
- Who will we hear in your songs? What are your influences?
Jonno: I’ve always been heavily influenced by 90s alternative rock, while Jess was into artists like Fiona Apple and Tom Waits. As Living Dead Girl, we take our influence from a mix of electronic and trip-hop: Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, Portishead, and South African band Lark were a big one as well.
- What’s the most important thing you’d want to tell people about your current release?
‘Simulation’ is the start of the band we’ve always wanted to be in. It’s free to download and share to support the release of our debut single and video for ‘Skylines’ which’ll be coming out October 16th.
- Who else can you recommend from your genre or local area for people to have a listen to?
Jonno: One of our favourite bands for a couple of years now has been Little Death Machine. It was proper love at first sight with this band for me, powerful alt/rock that’s dark and dissonant, yet melodic and emotional at the same time. So many great songs played with serious conviction.
Kubalove as well have been ones to watch for some flawless electro-pop goodness with a nice dark twist in there too.
8. Any gigs coming up?
We’ll be playing our first gigs at the end of the year. There’ll be some video footage up online around this time as well to show people what to expect at these shows. We think it’s the best way to show what you’ve got to offer as a live act, and we want to everybody to be able to check it out before they head down.
9. Where can we find/follow you online?
You can find us at www.livingdeadgirl.co.uk. The site has links to all of our social media as well.
